  • Volunteers Needed for the DSA Speech and Debate Team - Sat, November 7, 2009

    Sat, November 7, 2009 12:00 AM - 12:00 AM See description. The Speech and Debate Team at Durham School of the Arts was founded in 2008 by a Duke student as the first debate team in the history of Durham Public Schools. This is the team's first year traveling to tournaments, which are the backbone of the debate tradition. One requirement to attend is to bring a certain number of judges, and the team is looking for support from the Duke community. Judging a high school debate tournament means spending a Saturday at a local high school judging different speech and debate rounds. No particular background or qualifications are necessary, and you will be briefed on a few things before the tournament. In return, you'll have fun judging anything from debate rounds to speeches to competitive acting, and serve as a guide and inspiration to talented North Carolina high schoolers. The Nov. 7 tournament will be held at Jack Britt High in Fayetteville. To volunteer or for more information, contact Dania Toth, Head Coach, at dct7@duke.edu.

Join a small group in a traditional Japanese tea gathering at Duke Gardens' tea house in the Culberson Asiatic Arboretum. You will experience the patterns and poetry of "Chado," or "the Japanese way of Tea," while enjoying a seasonal sweet and an enticing bowl of whisked tea. The practice of Tea is characterized by the phrase "ichigo ichie," or "one moment--one meeting." The small (maximum of six) will meet at the Doris Duke Center and be escorted to the Durham-Toyama Sister Cities Pavilion. Learn the pattern and meaning of the Japanese tea gathering and the role of the garden setting. Please register early, as these gatherings usually fill up well in advance. Please also note the second and third sitting on this date, at 12:15 and 2:30 p.m.

  • Ethical Issues in Humanitarian Aid: A Discussion with Dr. Fiona Terry - Wed, November 11, 2009

    Wed, November 11, 2009 6:30 PM - 7:30 PM Social Sciences 136. Dr. Fiona Terry has spent most of the past 15 years involved in humanitarian relief operations in different parts of the world, including Northern Iraq, Somalia, the Great Lakes region of Africa, Liberia, and along the Sino-Korean border. From 2000 to 2003 she worked as a research director with Médecins Sans Frontières (Doctors without Borders) in Paris, before spending three years in Myanmar (Burma) with the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). She is currently the Practitioner-in-Residence at the Kenan Institute for Ethics and will return back to the field after this semester at Duke. Before coming to Duke, Dr. Terry was based in Sudan, where she had worked as an independent researcher conducting a study for the ICRC. Dr. Terry holds a PhD in international relations and political science from the Australian National University and is author of Condemned to Repeat?: The Paradox of Humanitarian Action. She won the 2006 Grawemeyer Award for Ideas Improving World Order.

Accomplished speakers share their experiences working in international affairs in an informal setting, and offer insightful anecdotes depicting typical missions around the world. Our second speaker in this series is Noah Weisbord. He will share anecdotes about the behind-the-scenes work at the INTERNATIONAL CRIMINAL COURT in The Hague, where he was law clerk to CHIEF PROSECUTOR Luis Moreno-Ocampo. Prior to working at the ICC, he traveled to Rwanda to study gacaca--community-based genocide trials inspired by an indigenous justice tradition. Weisbord is currently a delegate to the Special Working Group on the Crime of Aggression established by the Assembly of States Parties to the ICC. The working group is tasked with defining the crime in the lead-up to the ICC's first review conference in 2010.

"Chevolution" tells the story of Che Guevara, the Argentinean doctor who chose to take up the gun and join Castro in the fight against imperialism in Cuba.
